‘I don’t have a Twitter account and I won’t ever’: Dakota Fanning explains how she maintains a private life

She has successfully made the tricky transition from child star to Hollywood starlet.

And Dakota Fanning has achieved it by doing her best to live a normal, quiet life.

One thing the Twilight Saga actress has vowed is that she will never join the ranks of social networking sites, stating that she values her privacy too much.

In an interview with Wonderland magazine, the youngster said: ‘I really don’t need to let people know where I am and what I’m doing. I feel like a lot of people want their privacy but yet they tell people where they are.

‘It’s just not for me. I don’t have a Facebook or Twitter and I won’t ever. There’s plenty of impostors out there. There’s enough Dakota Fannings on Twitter for all of us.’

Dakota, who is currently studying at NYU, found fame aged seven in I Am Sam, where she played Sean Penn’s daughter.

However despite starting in front of the cameras at an early age, Dakota insists she never considered herself a child star.

She told Wonderland: ‘I’ve never really felt like a child star. That name always felt really odd to me.

‘I’ve just felt like I was an actor at six and seven and, you know, a child who happened to act. But when you turn 18 you’re seen as able to do more things and more roles.’

It was while filming I Am Sam that she first realised she could make a career out of acting.

She said: ‘For someone who’s that young to feel completely at home being filmed playing someone else, that really means that that’s where you belong.

‘So that’s how I view that film as a whole – as a moment when I just realised, “I could do this. I could do this forever”.’

Dakota’s candid interview with the magazine for its April/May 2012 cover is accompanied by a quirky fashion shoot.

The actress’s musings about her transition into adulthood are reflected in the coming-of-age style shoot, shot by Cedric Buchet.

Dakota looks like a living doll in the mixture of colourful and black-and-white images, which see the starlet’s golden locks styled into curls as she models a series of chic outfits.

As well as her role in the Twilight Saga coming to an end in the final instalment, which hits cinemas in November, fans will see Dakota portray the title role In Effie, which looks at the unusual relationship between Victorian art critic John Ruskin and his teen bride Effie Gray.

Dakota Fanning has grown up in front of the camera — and today, she turns 18!

The young actress got her start doing TV appearances on shows like “Ally McBeal” and “Spin City,” before getting her first big break starring alongside Sean Penn in “I Am Sam.”

From there, Dakota’s career was off and running — co-starring with Tom Cruise, Mike Myers, Robert DeNiro and Julia Roberts in flicks like “War of the Worlds,” “The Cat In the Hat,” “Hide and Seek” and “Charlotte’s Web.”

Recently, she juggled projects like playing the evil Jane in the “Twilight” movies with high school, where she was a cheerleader. Dakota graduated in June 2011.

Fanning currently attends NYU … but may be the only undergrad who also mingles with Natalie Portman, George Lucas and Marc Jacobs in the front row of New York Fashion Week‘s hottest shows.

Through it all, Dakota has remained a pretty, stylish and well-adjusted girl … and for that, we applaud her.

It’s been nearly a year since the news broke that Dakota Fanning had joined the cast of  “Girl’s Night Out”, Michael Hoffman’s film based on the true story of how the future Queen of Britain, Princess Elizabeth, and her sister Princess Margaret celebrated VE Day in 1945. Alexandra Roach joined the cast back in November, but as with all films long in gestation, it looks like Fanning has dropped out of the project – allowing British actress Juno Templeto jump into the role.

When the film was first announced back in February 2011, the plot details weren’t too specific, stating ” When [Princess Margaret] and her sister Elizabeth are allowed out from Buckingham Palace for one night to join in the celebrations, the night encompasses thrills, romance and danger.” However Britain’s Daily Mail now have further information, “Elizabeth has an innocent romance (this bit is totally fictional, folks!) with a recently returned soldier, who doesn’t realise he’s hanging out with a princess. The pair even go dancing at the Ritz.”

Temple was one of our Faces to Watch in 2012, and this year alone will see her in dark comedy “The Brass Teapot” opposite Michael Angarano, and filming thriller “Magic Magic” opposite Michael Cera. This is a great coup for the actress however, who will get her first big breakout in perhaps the most anticipated film of the year, Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises”.

Filming on “Girls’ Night Out” is set to start this Fall on location in London.

If you were planning an indie film and were looking for two actresses considered at the top of their game in that field, you’d be hard pressed to beat casting Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen. Director Naomi Foner had the same thought, and has finally locked them in alongside Anton Yelchin for Very Good Girls.

Though you wouldn’t think either woman likely to struggle getting dates, Girls will find Olsen and Fanning as two lifelong best friends planning to spend their summer after graduating high school finally losing their virginity. Like so many teens before them, they see it as a vital rite of passage into adulthood. But there’s a hitch: they both fall for the same boy (Yelchin), and soon things become very complicated…

Foner has been trying to get the film made for a while now, and with her cast in place can aim to start shooting this June in New York. “The film deals with female sexuality and friendship in a way we haven’t seen before,” she tells Deadline. “These girls will be stunning young women in a couple of years, but they’ve struggled through high school with only each other. Most of us have been there. This is the summer where they finally get to touch real life.”

Olsen is currently enjoying more Sundance acclaim in Josh Radnor’s Liberal Arts and has Martha Marcy May Marlene about to hit UK cinemas, and Fanning will crop up at the end of the year as psycho vamp Jane in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2.

Dakota Fanning has been in the film industry since she was 6 years old, but the young actress will take on her first adult role in the upcoming period drama, “Effie.”
The film, which is slated for release in June 2012, follows the disastrous marriage between 19th-century art critic John Ruskin and his young bride Effie Gray. The tumultuous union ended after Effie fell madly in love with young artist John Everett Millais.

“It’s the ultimate bad marriage,” Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson, who wrote the screenplay, told the Associated Press. “It happens to be a costume drama, but you could be doing a story with this kind of complexity and oddness in any period.”

Ruskin married Gray in 1848, when he was 29 and she was 19 and according to historians, on their wedding night, something about his bride horrified Ruskin and the union was not consummated. Ruskin claimed it was her personality, but Gray wrote that her husband “had imagined women were quite different to what he saw I was.”

“We’re talking about a girl who is objectified, and then disappoints a man by being real,” director Richard Laxton said. “If that isn’t relevant, I don’t know what is.”

At the time, divorce was illegal and so Gray suffered through the marriage until she fell in love with Millais, who was part of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood – a group of painters whose boldness shocked the Victorian art world.

Gray was granted an annulment of the marriage, due to her husband’s “incurable impotency” and went on to marry Millais and have eight children. But due to the controversy, Gray was barred from events attended by Queen Victoria and ostracized by many society members.

“It’s about her journey back to becoming a whole self again,” Fanning said of the role. “She’s such a strong woman — and such a modern woman for the time in which she lived.”

17-year-old Fanning might be ready to take on more adult roles, but some aren’t prepared to see the actress in a new light. Fanning’s recent Marc Jacobs ad for his fragrance Oh Lola! was banned in the United Kingdom, over claims that it “could be seen to sexualize a child.”

Fanning has also sparked controversy for appearing on the February cover of Cosmopolitan magazine, alongside headlines like “His Best Sex Ever” and “Too Naughty To Say Here.”

Fanning, who turns 18 next month, appears in the cover story entitled “Welcome to Your Cosmo Years, Dakota,” which tracks the young stars evolution to womanhood.

In August it was reported that Fanning had graduated from high school and was set to attend New York University in the fall.

She is enrolled at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, a college spokesperson told OnTheRedCarpet.com on Thursday, August 25.

The Georgia native rose to fame as a child actress when she appeared alongside Sean Penn in the 2001 movie “I Am Sam.”

In 2002, she starred in the romantic comedy “Sweet Home Alabama,” which featured Reese Witherspoon in the main role, and played Allie Keys in the mini-series “Taken” in 2002. Fanning starred in the 2005 reboot of “War of the Worlds” with Tom Cruise and in the 2006 film “Charlotte’s Web.” In 2009, Fanning starred in the movie “Push” and played the vampire Jane in “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” the second film in the hit series starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

In 2010, Fanning co-starred with Stewart in the music biopic “The Runaways” and reprised her role in the third “Twilight” movie, “Eclipse.” Fanning plays the same part in the fourth and final installment, the two-part “Breaking Dawn.” Part 2 is set for release on November 16, 2012.

Fanning recently filmed the independent film “Now Is Good” and has several more movies in the works – “Effie,” “Mississippi Wild” with Mickey Rourke and “Very Good Girls” with Dustin Hoffman.” All films are due out in 2012.

Dakota Fanning has a career people twice her age dream of, and her friend and costar Kristen Stewart has taken notice. The girls have starred in both the Twilight series and the rock biopic The Runaways, and KStew, 21, chatted about Dakota in the February issue of Cosmopolitan magazine.

“We had a few scenes that were crazy intimidating, and maybe once or twice, [Dakota] was like ‘Okay, I have a butterfly in my stomach,’” Kristen said of shooting Runways with her costar. “Meanwhile, I’m hyperventilating! Sometimes I give her shit for being so on the ball.”

As for how Dakota has shot up to superstardom before the age of 20, the actress admitted to Cosmo,

“Since I was young, I’ve always known who I was. I never really had to go through finding who I am. I’ve always felt really secure.”

It must run in the family as the actress’ younger sister Elle Fanning is also making a name for herself in Hollywood.

Dakota Fanning copied Britney Spears’ look as a child.

The 17-year-old actress looked up to music icons as a youngster and emulated their signature style. Dakota has enjoyed experimenting with different trends throughout her childhood.

“As a girl, Britney Spears was my idol, so I played around with some of her looks,” she explained in the January issue of Marie Claire.

“The most adventurous I’ve been with make-up was on the film The Runaways. One of the looks was like silver spray paint over my eyes which I still try to emulate, in a modified way.”

Dakota is a big fan of beauty products. The pretty star insists nail care is paramount when it comes to completing her look.

“I am obsessed with nail art – I’m desperate to try the thing where they literally put toys on your nails,” she quipped. “I collect Chanel nail polishes and have nearly all of them displayed in my bathroom – the minute one comes out, I’m all over it.”

Dakota’s younger sister Elle is following in her footsteps and has stepped into the film industry spotlight. Dakota is protective of her 13-year-old sibling, and wants her to dress appropriately for her age.

“If I were to give my younger sister beauty advice, I’d say that although it’s fun to go crazy with make-up, I don’t like seeing young girls trying to be someone they’re not,” she explained.

“I think we should keep youthful for as long as possible.”
